Dear Parents and Community Members,
The summer months were busy as we attempt to seek a viable option for our water filtration concerns at the district. Below is a summary of our efforts so far.
During a conference call held on May 23, 2019 with the following stakeholders: School District, Engineer, Construction Manager, Health Department representative and his supervisor. EAGLE (formally MDEQ) representatives were unable to join our call as they were in a day long training on the latest PFAS treatment options.
What we discovered was that no permitting is required for the replacement of the water tanks and softeners, however, treatment of PFAS would require some type of permits once EAGLE determines how to treat/filter PFAS from our groundwater. Currently, granulated carbon filter systems remove PFAS, but there may be other types of technology emerging that the district could research to meet our needs. Again, we are all waiting on EAGLE to provide guidance on this issue.
The district has six wells in total. We use the three shallow wells for our drinking and cooking needs. The three deeper wells are dedicated for fire suppression only and are not connected to the water supply system.
Another possible option was to re-connect the deeper wells that contain elevated levels of arsenic and treat accordingly as opposed to treating the wells that contain PFAS. Neither option sounds like the perfect solution, but the district must discuss all possible options. No decision has been made.
AECOM is the contractor the state uses to test for PFAS. They were out on June 27, 2019. The district requested that they test the three deeper wells for PFAS contamination, which they did. The results show that PFAS was not detected in the three deeper wells.
I have reached out to the local health department in an effort to schedule another community meeting with EAGLE representatives, Health Department officials and other interested parties who can offer insight. I forwarded four dates in September which I am hopeful all parties can coordinate schedules to make this happen.
I would like to thank the following for their ongoing efforts to help: Representative Jason Wentworth for his assistance. He has reached out to Nestle Corporation and secured, for the second time, 27,000 bottles of water for the district. We are also contracting with Shay water out of Saginaw on cooler stations placed strategically in each building. Our food service company, Chartwells, also offered financial support to purchase water.
